Writer's Block: B.Y.O.B. Holidays

pug love
There are 2 movies that I must watch every holiday season.

First, and most important, Love Actually. I'm a complete sucker for accents and I love most of the cast.

Second, Emmit Otter's Jugband Christmas. Loved it ever since I was a kid and it reminds of when Christmas was still magical.

What is your must-see holiday movie?

What keeps you up at night?

I sometimes get an overwhelming sad feeling that someone, somewhere is getting abused/hurt/bullied and I can't do shit about it. It doesn't even have to be a person. I think about people hurting an animal and I think I hurt more at times. Esp, since Christmas is right around the corner, I definitely get the blues. I try to get over it by participating in toys for tots. It helps a little but the nagging feeling still chews at me.

Wow, depressing much?

friday!

1. The best thing I did all week was... get back on a regular workout schedule. Last night's kettlebell class kicked my ass. A firm reminder that, unless I'm deathly ill, I cannot go more then a week without some sort of weight training.

2. Chocolate... make me super happy. Esp, if it comes in brownie form with peanut butter incorporated somehow.

3. Pets are... the best things next to chocolate. Pugzy was such a bright spot in my day. I miss her terribly.

4. My husband... is the best thing about my life. I totally agree with the statement from the original poster. My husband is awesome!

5. With the cooler weather I am looking forward to... the smell of crispy leaves and running thru corn mazes with my family. And yummy apple dumplings!

6. Something that's on my "wish list" right now... is a trip to Ireland. Some people long from tropical islands, I long her lush green hillsides and hot accents. Not that I would turn down a trip to the beach but that's further down on my list of places to be.

7. This weekend I am going to... live like those people who only work one job with weekends off. So pretty much, I'm open to whatever might come my way.

I always hate picking of favorite of anything. So, these are lyrics that hit me and stick in my head:

"i'd rather be foolish then, scared of my own mistakes"
- The New amsterdams

"heaven or heaven-less, we are all headed toward the same sweet darkness"
- Rocky Votolato

It's that time, Christmas time is here...

And I don't like it! Yes, ladies and gents,I don't like Christmas. It's my least favorite holiday. I'm just that person who gets the blues around this time of year. Every year, the sinking feeling rears it's ugly head. I don't know why either. I'm blessed to have a wonderful family and great friends. It's just I feel like I could be doing more or should have done more in the past year.

I try to lift myself up. I buy gifts for kids that may not get anything. I put thought into everything that I purchase for everyone. And I think that is the root of it, presents. I really feel like presents are the downfall. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy them. But, that shouldn't be the reason for this holiday. I just hate gross consumerism (not even sure if that's the right term). I hate seeing parents go crazy buying crap that will be tossed aside in months. And I hate seeing parents, who would give their kids the world, not be able to afford much. And, I'm not even getting religious either. I just think it should be another opportunity to share joy and the love of family and friends.

I'm hoping when that I stick to my guns when/if we have kids and try to have a light/non gift holidays.

And so I don't sounds like a total Debbie Downer, here are some things that I do enjoy about this time of year:

Light displays
Cookies!
The smell of Christmas trees
Some Christmas movies
very few christmas songs
crazy family dinner

Anyhoo, sorry if I brought anyone down. And from the bottom of my grinch heart:

Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays! And a very Happy New Year!!

My shower song pushed me thru spinning class today. And I had to keep telling myself, "if I keep spinning up, then I, too, can have a rockin' body like Shakira". Well, not exactly, but more rocking then what I got happening now.

Mom & Dad

pug love
Oops, missed a day. So the parents songs.

First, my dad. My dad is the strong, silent type. He's known to scare boyfriends with a mere glance. However, my husband and him really get along. My parents divorced when I was 14. Their relationship was rough, mostly due to drinking. I know there are things that happened in the past that should make me hate my dad. But, for whatever reason, I can't. Maybe it's because, when the divorce happened, my father broke down crying and asked me to forgive him. It was so hard to process, someone so strong, admitting defeat and asking a 14 year old not to hate him. To his credit, he stepped up his game when we were with him. He may have not communicated as much as I would have liked, but when we were with him, he made it count. When we started the wedding planning, I wanted to pick the perfect song. It's amazing how many cheesy songs that feel completely inappropriate for a father/daughter dance. I fell back on classic rock because it's something we share a mutual love for. If there is one thing we have in common, it's good music. Low and behold, I found a great Bruce Springsteen song. I thought the meaning went both way. That he was there for me as a dad and I would be there for him as a daughter.

Sadly, there is no youtube video for it, except for some terrible cover by a random lady. But, it's titled, When you need me.

Next up, my mom.
For a long time, I was really mad at my mom. She had good reasons for leaving my dad and I felt like she was a strong person. But then, she jumped right into a relationship with an abusive asshole. She wasted 10 year of her (and our) lives with this man. He hated me because I saw him for what he was and told him straight out. they say hindsight is 20 20. this is very true in this case. I wish I would have called the cops sooner. I wish that I would have told my family sooner. I really resented her for not loving us enough to leave him. I understand now that abusive relationships can be all consuming and the head games can be a prison. But, he's out of our lives now and I couldn't be more grateful.

Still, I hate to admit it, there is a sting that lingers. I love my mom dearly and am thankful for everything she did do for us. I'm glad we are rebuilding. But, I can't help but think of here every time I hear this song.

I can never comprehend when some people say they don't like music.

What? Are you kidding me? What do you do in your car?

I love music! It bonds people. It can change your world in the matter of 3 minutes (or longer). It can take you back to a certain place or time in an instant. I wish I knew how to play. I've tried to learn but I get all frustrated and walk away. But, I can sing ok and have a talented husband that entertains me daily. (or annoy me a few random times, like trying to play keyboard along with Phantasm)

I have the feeling that this will be hard but I'm up for the challenge. Here goes nothing... =)
